Just realized the guy at a museum table in Abilene was right about flint knapping flaws
I was at a small museum event in Abilene about 3 months ago with a flint knapping table set up by a local collector. I picked up what I thought was a real nice Clovis style point and asked him about it, and he just said "flip it over" and pointed at one spot near the base. He told me a real knapper would have worked around that little bump instead of shearing straight through it, and after he walked me through it I could not unsee it. He said most fakes fail on the edge angles and not the shape, which is what fooled me. I still think about it every time I handle a point now, because the shape can look dead on and the pressure flaking pattern is what gives it away. It was a 10 minute chat and it did more for me than reading forum threads. Does anyone else have a story where a collector or knapper pointed out a detail you had been missing? I would love to hear what specific thing tipped you off on a fake.
