Found a Roman coin in my garden and my old way of cleaning it was a total mess
I used to just soak finds in vinegar, which turned a nice denarius I found last year into a weird green blob. A grad student at the local university dig saw a photo and basically yelled at me over email, telling me to only use distilled water and a soft brush. So now I keep a little kit with a toothbrush and a bottle of the fancy water, and it's way less scary. Anyone else have a 'what was I thinking' moment with a find?

Yeah, the cola trick is way too harsh for anything delicate.

Remember that trend of cleaning old jewelry with cola? I tried it on a tarnished silver locket from my grandma. It took off the tarnish and half the delicate floral engraving. Now it just looks like a sad, shiny oval.
