Can we talk about how a random spray bottle made my artifact hunt way easier?
I was doing a surface survey at this old farm site, and the ground was so dry that everything looked the same. My brain kept drifting to how I forgot to water my tomatoes back home, which has nothing to do with archaeology, but anyway. I had a small spray bottle in my bag from when I cleaned my glasses last week. On a whim, I sprayed a patch of soil to see if it would help. At first, it just looked like mud, but then the darker wet soil made these light pottery bits stand out like crazy. I ended up spotting five shards in ten minutes that I would have walked right past. It's a tiny win, but it saved me so much time and eye strain. Now I always keep a bit of water handy for quick checks in dry spots.
