A pottery expert in the field told me I was washing artifacts wrong, switched to dry brushing only.

She pointed out water was destroying fragile slip layers on a dig in Arizona last year, so now I just use soft brushes and toothpicks for the small stuff like the 2-inch bowl fragment I found, anyone else had to unlearn old cleaning habits?

Start brushing everything you used to scrub with soap and water. Had the same wake up call with a cast iron pan I was scrubbing too hard, ruined the seasoning completely. It's funny how we think more aggressive cleaning is better when sometimes gentle is the way to go, like with those fragile slip layers you mentioned. Makes you wonder what else we're being too rough on without realizing it.

Exactly, we probably scrub too many things in life.
