Warning: Almost took a bad fall from a hollow maple
The tree looked fine from the ground, but up close it was soft inside. Now I give every trunk a good knock with my knuckles before I climb.

Actually a hollow trunk doesn't always mean it's weak. Some older trees are hollow in the center but have plenty of solid wood around the outside to hold weight. The knuckle test isn't foolproof either, a solid sound just means the spot you hit is okay, not the whole branch above you.
