The pruning critique from a retired mentor in Asheville that stuck with me

Back in March, a retired arborist watched me clean up a red maple and bluntly said I was leaving too many stub cuts that would rot later. I switched to cutting just outside the branch collar with a sharper saw, no flush cuts, and the healing looks way cleaner now. Has anyone else had an older pro call out a habit you didn't even notice?
