Saw a 100 year old oak in Savannah with cables holding it together and now I'm wondering about my own crown reductions
I was walking through Forsyth Park in Savannah two weeks ago and spotted this massive live oak with three steel cables running through the canopy and a big concrete fill in a hollow. Got me thinking about a red maple I cabled in Charlotte, NC back in October, 1/2 inch steel, and whether I set the anchor points right. The tree looked healthy but that concrete plug made me nervous about decay hiding underneath. How do you all decide when to cable versus just remove, especially on older hardwoods?
