Old timer told me to stop using climbing spikes on removals unless it's dead
Had a buddy who would spike every tree he climbed for years, then a retired climber told me to only spike dead or hazard trees because it damages the cambium... well last month I spiked a healthy oak by habit and the customer pointed out the marks. Has anyone else had to break the spike habit?

...my buddy Eric spiked a massive old maple for a pruning job last spring, left these ugly vertical scars all the way up. The homeowner's wife came out crying because her grandpa planted that tree fifty years ago. Eric had to offer to grind the stump for free and plant a new one. He still talks about it like a war story.
