Had a client in Portland insist we save a huge, split maple with 200 feet of cable. It held for a week before a windstorm took half of it down anyway.

Man, that's brutal. I always wonder about the soil anchor points in those big cable jobs. Was the ground already soaked from rain before that wind hit? Sometimes the tree is fine but the whole root plate just lets go.

My buddy in Oregon lost a huge fir that way last fall. The cables were solid but the whole root ball tore out after a week of heavy rain. It looked like a giant pulled the plug on the whole hillside.
