Climbing spurs on takedowns? I stopped using them on removals under 14 inches and my knees thank me
Everybody in my area swears you need spurs for any removal, big or small, and I used to go along with it. Last spring I did a 60 foot silver maple takedown in Fort Wayne and my knees were wrecked for three days after, so I tried something different. On any stem under 14 inches I now climb on a lanyard and a flip line with no gaffs, just work the rope and cut in small pieces. It sounds slow but I finished a 9 inch ash removal in about 2 hours, which is close to my spur time, and I am not limping after. My old lead guy says it is unsafe, but I keep two tie-ins the whole time and check them before each cut. Curious if anyone else climbs removals clean like this, or am I the only one around here who ditched the spikes on small stuff?
