Tried sealing a dryer vent with foil tape on a hunch in Tucson, and it cost me a callback plus 45 bucks
So a lady in Tucson called me out for her dryer taking two cycles to dry a load, and I checked the usual stuff first, lint trap, blower wheel, thermistor, all fine. The vent run was about 14 feet with two elbows, and I spotted a gap where the flex connects to the rigid pipe behind the wall, so instead of doing it the right way with a proper clamp and a new section of semi rigid, I wrapped the joint in foil tape and called it good. She called back 9 days later saying the dryer was running hot and shutting off, and when I pulled the tape there was a nice little lint nest packed right into that gap, so the tape had basically made a shelf for it. I shelled out for a new vent kit out of my own pocket, 45 bucks, plus the callback trip, because no way was I charging her for my shortcut. What I took from it is that foil tape has no business on a vent joint that carries lint, that sticky backing just gives the fuzz something to grab. Any of you got a brand of clamp or a tape you actually trust on dryer vents, or is it rigid pipe and metal clamps only for everybody?
