The $80 Blu-ray box set that made me question my entire collection

I dropped $80 on a limited edition Blu-ray box set for an old mecha series I loved as a kid. The discs had terrible compression and the subtitles were clearly machine translated. Meanwhile, my friend spent $60 on a similar set for a different show and said it looked perfect on his 4K TV. So is it the studio cutting corners or just bad luck with which series you pick? Has anyone else gotten burned on a pricey re-release or did you actually get what you paid for?

Man, I feel this. Here's the thing nobody talks about though: some of those older mecha shows were mastered on really cheap videotape back in the day, so no matter how much you spend on a fancy box set, the source material is just garbage to begin with. Your buddy's show might have had a film negative sitting in a vault somewhere while yours was probably digitized from a worn-out VHS copy. So it's not just about cutting corners now, it's about what the studio actually had to work with thirty years ago. Makes you wonder how much of this "limited edition" hype is just marketing a turd in a nice box, doesn't it?
