Had a friend who read a theory about Neon Genesis Evangelion that flipped his whole view on the ending.

That "dead the whole time" idea gets passed around a lot... but it really misses the point. The ending is more about Shinji finally choosing to connect with other people, even if it hurts. The whole last episode is him learning to accept himself.
