PSA: I blew $60 on a mystery anime loot box and got a keychain of a show I have never heard of
So against my better judgment I ordered one of those $60 mystery anime boxes from a site I saw in a YouTube ad. The picture on the page had like twelve popular shows on it so I figured there was no way to lose. It showed up in a beat up box three weeks later and the big item was a keychain of some guy from a mecha show I have never even seen. There was also a sticker sheet, a tiny notebook, and a can of melon soda that was two months past its date. I looked up the keychain on eBay and the same one was selling for four dollars. My roommate laughed so hard he almost choked on his ramen. I am not saying all mystery boxes are a scam but this one sure felt like paying sixty bucks to clean out someone's junk drawer. I am going to stick with buying shows I pick out myself from now on. Has anyone gotten a good mystery box or are they all like this?
That line about "paying sixty bucks to clean out someone's junk drawer" is exactly what these things are, but here is the part that bugs me more than the junk. Those ads with twelve popular shows on them are the whole trick. The seller never promises you any of those shows. They just put the most searched shows on the picture because they know people will assume. Then they buy closeout stuff by the pound, stuff that did not sell at cons, stuff from shows that flopped, and box it up. The house always wins because they paid maybe five dollars for what they sent you. What gets me is the melon soda two months past date. That tells you nobody is even checking what goes in the box, they are just grabbing whatever is on the shelf. So it is not even a fun gamble with real odds, it is a warehouse with a mailing label.
