Overheard two guys arguing about subbed vs dubbed and I side with neither

I was at a coffee shop near Pike Place last Tuesday and these two guys were going at it pretty loud. One said fans who watch dub are lazy and miss the real performance. The other said sub-only folks are just elitists who like reading homework. Honestly, both of them made me want to walk out. I watch sub for shows like Attack on Titan because the Japanese voice actors sell the screams better, but I grew up on Toonami dubs and Cowboy Bebop's English cast is still the best version to me. The whole debate feels like people trying to prove they're bigger fans instead of just enjoying the story. Different shows need different treatments, and even different moods change what I pick. Has anyone else landed in the middle and just gotten flak from both sides?
