Windows 98 v Windows XP Multimedia Player Dropoff

I was messing around with an old Pentium III last night trying to play a CD. Windows 98 Media Player was a disaster but it worked for basic audio. Then I loaded XP on the same machine and the Media Player was super bloated and slow. It went from a functional tool to a clunky video jukebox in about 4 years. Anyone else notice the bloat just exploded between 98 and XP?

Caught myself doing the exact same thing last month with my old Dell. I fired up XP and the Media Player took like 30 seconds just to load, then it froze trying to play a simple MP3. Meanwhile 98's player was ugly and basic but it just worked without all that extra nonsense. Maybe it's just me but I miss when software actually respected my hardware instead of trying to be a whole entertainment center. Idk, I'm probably the last person who should complain since I still run a CRT as my daily driver.

My 2002 Toshiba does the exact same thing with Media Player.
