TIL my grandpa's old tape deck actually sounds better than my digital setup

Was over at my grandpa's place last weekend helping him clean out his garage. He pulled out this old Sony TC-377 from 1978 and asked if I wanted it. I almost said no because who uses tape anymore right? But then he played me a recording of my dad's band from 1985 and the warmth hit different. The way the vocals sit in the mix without that digital harshness made me rethink all my streaming habits. Has anyone else here gone back to tape and actually preferred it?

Oh man this hits close to home. I actually did the SAME thing last summer and it was a total disaster at first. I found my dad's old Marantz deck in the attic and got so excited I ordered like 20 blank tapes off eBay before I even checked if it worked. Spoiler alert: it did NOT work and I spent three whole days replacing belts and cleaning the pinch roller with rubbing alcohol like some kind of amateur repair person. But once I finally got it running and put on a Fleetwood Mac album from 1980 that I'd inherited, I literally sat there for an hour just staring at the reels spinning. It's like the music breathes differently you know? No clipped peaks or weird compression artifacts just that warm fuzzy saturation that makes everything feel like it's wrapped in a cozy blanket.

and that Fleetwood Mac album is literally the perfect test for tape lol. the way Stevie's vocals float without any sibilance is just chef's kiss. i swear digital tries so hard to be clean it ends up stripping all the soul out of the music. tape just lets everything sit naturally without fighting your ears. honestly makes me wonder what else we've been missing this whole time.
