The light meter on my Pentax spotmetering off a gray card is why half my beach shots at Ocean City came back dark
I shot a roll of Portra 400 at the beach in Ocean City last weekend and 18 of 36 frames came back muddy and dark. Turns out I was metering off the bright sand instead of the gray card my cousin gave me three years ago that I never used. The sand reads about two stops hotter than it looks to your eye, so my meter kept telling me to close down when I should have opened up. A guy at the camera shop on Route 50 looked at my prints and said, "son, you metered the beach, not your subject," and I felt like a fool. How do you all handle metering when the ground in the frame is brighter than the sky?
