Shoutout to the guy at the hardware store in Ames who showed me how to fix a screen door with a $2 spline
My screen door had a 6 inch rip in the mesh and I figured I would just buy a whole new door for $80 and be done with it. A guy at the counter in Ames asked what I was doing and walked me back to the screen aisle instead, handed me a roll of spline for $2 and a little wooden roller tool for $4. I spent about 45 minutes on the porch fighting the old spline out with a flathead screwdriver before it finally clicked that you just roll the new one into the groove while pressing down. Door works fine now and I still have half a roll left. Anyone got a trick for keeping the mesh from wrinkling at the corners when you start?
Man, I felt that fight with the flathead in my soul, that first spline is always a pain! For the corners, I start at one corner and pull the mesh just a little tight as I roll, working my way around so it eases in instead of bunching up.
