Old Paul at the hardware store told me I was sanding on a pad sander wrong because grain direction matters more than speed on a walnut desk

He spent 20 minutes showing me why going slower by hand with 120 grit gives a finish you can feel before you see, so now I leave the electric stuff in the truck for framing jobs - has anyone else switched back to hand sanding for furniture work?

Gotta ask though - did he show you that trick where you wet the wood first before the final hand sanding pass? I found that made a bigger difference than just switching techniques, especially on walnut where the grain can be real finicky. Also curious if you noticed less fuzzies on the surface after going manual, or was it more about getting that glassy smooth feel?

Did he say anything about how long to let the water sit before sanding, or is it more of a quick wipe thing?
