That tricky window casing took me 6 weekends to figure out
I was trying to install new trim around a replacement window in my 1950s north valley house. Thought it would be a simple Saturday project. The original plaster walls are so out of square and the old framing was not level at all. I cut the casing at standard 45 degree angles and every single joint had a gap. Tried shimming the window itself but it was already set in. Finally got it looking clean by scribing each piece to the wall with a compass and cutting custom angles. Took 6 weekends of trial and error. Has anyone else dealt with old plaster walls that just reject modern trim methods?

Wait, 6 weekends? That's insane for window trim, man. I've done that scribing trick before with a compass but it usually took me an afternoon, not over a month. Those old plaster walls are a nightmare though, I feel your pain. Were you at least drinking good beer while you were fighting with those gaps?

Yeah, 6 weekends. By the end I was drinking whatever was cheap and close. Started with some decent IPAs but by week 4 it was whatever tallboys I could grab without making eye contact at the gas station. The plaster in this place laughs at straight lines. Had one gap so bad I had to shim it twice and still ended up caulking a quarter inch. That compass trick works great until your wall looks like a topographical map.
