I thought a cool roof coating was just a gimmick for our Albuquerque sun

When my neighbor suggested a reflective roof coating last summer, I honestly rolled my eyes. I figured it was just another expensive product that wouldn't make a real difference in the heat. But after my AC unit struggled through July and my power bill hit $180, I decided to try it on my own flat roof section over the garage. I used a basic white elastomeric coating from the local hardware store, and the change was shocking. The surface temperature dropped over 20 degrees on a hot afternoon, and my house just felt cooler overall. My next power bill was $35 lower, which convinced me it wasn't just hype. Has anyone else tried a specific coating brand here that held up well after a few seasons?

That's a huge temperature drop, and it makes total sense with our sun here. I did a similar thing on my shed roof with a basic white coating from the big box store, and it's held up for two summers now without any cracks or peeling. The real test will be after this winter's freeze-thaw cycles, but so far so good. It's one of those things that seems too simple to work until you actually see the difference it makes on your bills and comfort.

Honestly, that temperature drop doesn't surprise me at all. The real win is how it smooths out the daily heat load so your AC isn't just fighting a giant thermal battery all evening. I'm curious if anyone's tried a slightly more textured coating to handle our dust storms better, since a layer of dirt kinda defeats the whole reflective purpose.
