Appreciation post: the tile guy who told me my Schluter plan was backwards
I got into it with a tile setter named Ruben at the Sandia Heights job back in March. I had my whole plan drawn up for Ditra over a plywood subfloor with 3/4 inch thickness, thought I had it all figured out. He looked at it for two minutes, tapped the edge of the board with his trowel, and said "you're overthinking the membrane and underthinking the deflection." Told me the joists needed sistering before any of it mattered, and he was right. I've done six kitchens since then and now I check the floor joist span first thing, every time. Curious if anyone else here learned that lesson the hard way or if it was just me being stubborn.
