A tile guy at the State Fair demo in Expo NM changed how I prep my bathroom floor
So I went to the Home Show at Expo New Mexico a couple weeks back mostly to kill time and grab free pens, and there was this older tile guy doing a live demo booth near the back. He was showing how he preps a bathroom subfloor before laying cement board, and he kept stressing one thing over and over: check for soft spots by walking the whole floor in your socks and marking anything that flexes. I always just screwed the board down and moved on, never really tested it. He said he'd seen a floor near Nob Hill fail after 8 months because of one spongy spot by the toilet flange the homeowner never noticed. So I tried his method on my own hall bath reno here in ABQ and sure enough, one soft patch by the tub that I'd been stepping over for weeks. Cut it out, sistered a joist, and now the board sits dead flat. Curious if any of you actually walk your subfloors before laying board or am I the only one who was skipping that step?
