Ran a 22 gauge wire 180 feet for a door contact and it actually held up, but am I asking for trouble?
Last Tuesday I had this old warehouse job in Dayton where the only path to the back overhead door was a 180 foot run, and the customer refused to pay for a repeater or a wireless transmitter. Out of pure frustration I tried 22 gauge stranded instead of my usual 18, and the zone has been reading clean on the panel for 6 days straight with no false trips. Has anyone else gotten away with thin wire on a long run like this, or am I just waiting for a ground loop or voltage drop to bite me in a month?
