Panel battery died mid-test on a 3rd floor job in Austin

I was running a walk test on a DSC setup last Friday and the keypad went blank right after I triggered a door contact. Turns out the previous guy installed a SLA battery with bulged case, charging circuit killed it months ago. I carry a spare 12V 7Ah in my van now, any of you check battery health during routine service or just when they fail?
