Old panel swap in a 1970s house surprised me with cloth wire

I mean, I've done plenty of panel changes over the years, but this one last month in a ranch style place outside Dayton really threw me. The customer said the system was 'original' and I figured that just meant old keypad, maybe some rusted contacts. Pulled the lid off the main alarm panel and found the wiring was that old cloth wrapped stuff, not just on the sensors but the power feed too. I stopped right there and called my supplier to ask if they'd seen it lately. The guy laughed and said he hadn't seen cloth wire since the 80s. I ended up having to run new wire for the whole house loop, which added about 3 hours to the job. Customer wasn't thrilled about the extra cost, but I showed him the cracked insulation and he got it. Has anyone else run into that vintage wiring and just patched it instead? I'm curious if that's even safe with modern panels.
