Everyone says skip the panel upgrade on old houses, but a job in Gary proved me wrong
Had a install in Gary last Tuesday, 1930s house with cloth wiring and a 60 amp fuse box. The homeowner wanted just new keypads and sensors, and my partner kept pushing to just wire it and go. I opened that panel and every neutral was doubled up on one bar with rust everywhere, so I ran new home runs for 6 zones and swapped the board myself. Took 9 hours instead of 4, but when I tested the dialer it caught a ground fault the old setup was hiding for who knows how long. Anyone else refuse to tie new gear into a panel that sketchy, or do you just bill the extra and move on?
