Picked up a marking trick from an old timer on a DC-9 last week

I was fighting with scribing panels on a Gulfstream for like 4 hours and getting nowhere, this guy walks over and shows me to use a dental pick dipped in layout dye instead of a regular scribe. The pick glides through the dye without tearing the metal and leaves a line you can actually see. Anyone else got a weird tool swap that saved your ass on a job?
