Kept torqueing my own oil filter to 25 ft-lbs for 6 months until a guy at the Tulsa hangar asked why I was crushing the gasket
I figured the tighter the better until I saw the gasket squished out past the housing on a 172 last week. How are you guys setting yours, hand tight plus a quarter turn or do you actually grab the wrench?

I used to crank mine down with a wrench too until a guy showed me the spec sheet for my Skyhawk says 16 to 18 ft-lbs. Now I just spin it on hand tight and give it a quarter turn past snug.
