Just realized the corrosion I keep finding on Bell 206 tail rotor hubs is way worse than 10 years back
Been doing annuals on these things since 2004 and something shifted. Same part, same climate here in Wichita, but now I'm scraping white powder off the hub face almost every inspection instead of every third one. Older guys say it's the new wash chemicals we switched to around 2015 doing it. Anyone else seeing this on their ships or is it just my hangar?
Read a NTSB report a while back on tail rotor hub failures that mentioned newer aqueous wash chems can leave chlorides behind if you don't rinse right. The older solvent based stuff flashed off fast but these newer mixes cling to tight spots like the hub face and grip plate area. We switched to a different brand in 2016 and saw the same white crust start showing up. One of our guys started doing a hot water rinse after every wash and it cut the corrosion way down. Might be worth checking what your wash is leaving behind.
