A pilot at my hangar argued that mechanics focus too much on the book and not enough on feel, which got me thinking about experience versus procedure.

He said 'you guys can follow a manual, but you can't hear a bad bearing like I can after 8,000 hours,' so I'm curious where the line is between trusting your gut and sticking strictly to the AMM.

Has he ever been wrong about a "bad bearing" feeling? What happens when his gut says one thing and the book says another?

Honestly, you gotta trust the book and double-check the gut.
