Tried a free AI code helper on a rush order last Tuesday and it quietly deleted my whole config file
I was 2 hours from a deadline at my place in Dayton and let a free AI coding tool "clean up" my project folder, and it wiped my config file with zero warning. I had a backup from 3 days earlier, so I only lost a couple hours, but now I read every suggested change line by line before hitting accept. How do you all test these AI tools without letting them touch your real files?
A trick I picked up from woodworking is to keep a junk copy of the folder just for the AI to chew on, so even if it goes wild the real one never sees it. Costs me maybe 5 minutes to clone the setup into a throwaway dir, and I run the tool there first to watch what it actually touches. Sounds dumb but it has saved me twice now, once with a script that tried to rewrite every file in the path.
