Can we talk about the $2.99 gas station app ad that called me out by name
A marketer at a Denver meetup 4 months ago said my ad copy was "too clever to convert," so I cut every joke and just wrote "Cheapest gas near you, tap here," and clicks went up 3x, but now I can't tell if that proves honesty sells or that nobody reads past 5 words, so which side are you on?
That Denver meetup guy sounds like he was just parroting whatever book he read last year. I had a similar thing happen with a mattress shop in Boise, my funny headline pulled 1.2 percent and the boring one hit 4 percent, and I still can't say which side won. What gets me is your copy now says nothing about why anyone should pick you over the next station, so you may be getting clicks from people who just wanted a price, not a brand. That's fine if all you sell is gas, but it's a sad little trade to make.
