I actually think the Geocities layout craze was way better than we give it credit for
I was scrolling through a retro design blog last night and they were talking about how tacky the old Geocities grid layouts were, all those sparkly GIFs and clashing colors. Everyone in the comments was laughing at how ugly it looked. But I don't know, I think they're missing something. Those sites had personality, you know? Every page was a reflection of who made it, like a digital bedroom. I remember visiting a fan site for a band I liked back in 98, and the owner had woven this whole story through the navigation, it felt like you were exploring their world. Compare that to now, where every site is a clean template with no soul. Sure, the design was messy, but at least it was different. Has anyone else felt this way, or am I just nostalgic for something that wasn't really good?

@robin777 bet that hamster page had more heart than half the corporate sites today. Saw a piece online about how those clashing colors and sparkly GIFs were actually people learning HTML for the first time, not designers following trends. Every bad gradient was some 14 year old proud they figured out how to make a background. The mess was the point, it was real.
