Changed my mind about GeoCities after poking around a saved copy at the Detroit library
Last Saturday I went to the main branch of the Detroit Public Library to kill a couple hours and ended up at a computer in the local history room. A librarian there showed me an old hard drive they keep with about 400 saved GeoCities pages from 1996 to 1999, all personal homepages from Michigan. I used to think those pages were just ugly noise, all the tiled backgrounds and spinning mail icons and under construction gifs. But scrolling through them, I got it. These folks were building their own little spot on the web before anyone handed them a template, and the mess was the point. One page had a handwritten HTML guide the guy wrote for his grandkids. So what am I missing, did anyone here ever run a GeoCities page, and do you still have the files?
