Why does nobody warn you that downloading one song on a 28.8 modem in 1997 eats your whole evening
I tried to grab a single track off Napster back in 1997 and it took 4 hours and 20 minutes, which felt like a whole work shift. I had a 28.8 US Robotics modem and my mom needed the phone line for her sister in Toledo at 9pm, so I kept getting kicked off. The file was a 3.2 MB WAV of a song I won't name, and the little progress bar in the Netscape download window moved so slow I could watch it and see nothing change. I started the download at 6pm, got to 71 percent by 8:45, then my brother picked up the phone to call his girlfriend and it died right there. I had to start over from zero because there was no resume back then, no download manager, nothing. Ended up staying up until almost 2am to babysit it, and the song had a skip in the middle anyway. What was your longest single download back then, and did you ever actually get the file?
