Spent $40 on a Geocities webring subscription in 1997
Wanted more traffic for my Sailor Moon fan page. The webring just sent me a bunch of broken links and spammy sites. Anyone else get burned by those early web traffic schemes?

Remember thinking webrings were the smart way to find an audience. That exact experience taught me most of them were just digital ghost towns. Felt like paying for a map that only led to empty houses.

Webrings were just links at the bottom of a page. Calling them a paid map is a bit much. It was free to join one. You clicked a link and maybe found a dead site, so what. The whole web was like that in the 90s. It wasn't some big scam, just how things worked back then.
