My college roommate swore by dial-up email delays to avoid busy signals
He said to wait exactly 8 seconds before hitting send after connecting, and I blew off his advice until I got booted 6 times in a row trying to send a term paper, has anyone else heard this trick or was he just messing with me?

You ever try holding the phone at a weird angle too? That old trick is legit for dial-up, I swear by it. The 8-second thing works because the modem needs time to fully sync with the server, especially if you're on a noisy line. I used to count it out loud like a dummy while my paper was queued up, and it cut the busy signals down by a ton. Also, make sure you're not slamming the handset down (if you're still using one) because that can glitch the connection. It's not magic, but it's real.
