Dropped $60 on a 'retro internet' CD-ROM in 1997

That disc claimed to have 10,000 hand-picked websites archived, but half the links were dead and the other half were just ads for AOL. Anyone else get burned by those scam compilation discs?

My cousin paid $80 for that same disc and spent a whole weekend clicking every link. He found one working page about someone's pet iguana.

My buddy Mike found one of those discs at a thrift store for like five bucks back in 2018. He spent two whole afternoons digging through it because he swore there had to be something cool. The only thing he actually found that worked was a broken link to a Geocities page about someone's collection of vintage bottle caps. The bottle cap guy hadn't updated it since 2001 and the images were all dead. Mike still talks about it like it was some kind of treasure hunt.
