Appreciation post: my 28.8k modem beat my college's T1 line for one glorious night in 1997
My roommate and I argued for weeks about whether dialing into the local BBS from our dorm in Kalamazoo was faster than the campus T1 for grabbing a 4MB shareware file, so we timed both on a Tuesday night. The T1 choked because 40 other students were hammering it, and my little US Robotics finished first by a full 90 seconds, which I still bring up at reunions. Was that a fluke of campus crowding or did anyone else swear their home dial up felt snappier than the fancy school connection?
