inTook my old Pentax to the county fair and got a shot of a goat wearing a tiny hat
Honestly, I've never bought into the idea that animals know they're being photographed. That goat was probably just bored and the hat strap tasted interesting. The magic comes from being ready with the camera when their normal, weird behavior happens. Getting a good animal photo is more about patience and luck than any special connection.

inWarning: That 'simple' flange alignment on a 40-year-old boiler in Toledo took me 3 hours
Oh man, "45-minute job turned into a half-day project" is the official motto of working on old gear. It's like the metal just decides to crumble if you look at it wrong. You go in with a wrench and a plan, and you leave having performed full surgery with a grinder. Classic.

inTried to explain a heat pump to my cousin at a family cookout
Was he wrong though? (I mean, a fridge is basically a small heat pump for a box.) That's actually a pretty solid way to get the basic idea across before you dive into the nerdy details.

inHot take: My drafting instructor in Milwaukee made us hand-draw a whole site plan after our CAD crashed.
Pencil and vellum, go" is a terrifying sentence. My hand cramps just thinking about it. That forced skill is weirdly useful though, it makes you actually understand the drawing instead of just clicking buttons. My own hand drafting looked like a toddler with a ruler, so I'm Team Digital, but I get the lesson.

inThat new fiber splice tool from last month is already giving me grief
Man, that sounds like my luck with any new tool. Last time I tried one of those "time saver" gadgets, it was a paint can opener that snapped in half on the second can. I ended up using a flathead screwdriver like always. Sometimes the old way is just the right way, you know? Especially when you're on the clock and a tool decides to take a break before you do.
