Tried to explain fabric grain to my date and it went sideways.
We were at a dinner party and I got way too into talking about how to match patterns. Now she thinks I'm obsessed with sofa cushions.

Honestly, fabric grain talk at a dinner party is a sure way to lose someone. Tbh, I get how matching patterns can be interesting but it sounds like sofa stuff to most people. Ngl, you gotta save the technical stuff for when they ask, otherwise it just seems random. Been there with my own weird hobbies, it's a tough sell.

Have you ever tried to explain a weird hobby and seen people tune out? In my experience, timing is key, so jumping into fabric grain details unprompted often seems random. Your mileage may vary, but I find it helps to start with a relatable hook, like how grain changes how fabric hangs. If they show interest, then you can get technical. Otherwise, save the deep talk for when someone asks. It's a tough balance, but reading the room makes a big difference.
