Found a weird metal box in an alley with a note about 'sunlight'

I was walking behind a strip mall in Tacoma last week and saw this little tin box half under a dumpster. It had a piece of tape on it with 'point at noon sun' written in pencil. I opened it and there was just a lens and a small scrap of photo paper inside. I figured why not, so I waited until noon and held the lens over the paper in direct light for about 30 seconds. A faint image of a dog appeared, like an old photogram. Has anyone else ever found something that came with its own weird instructions that actually did something?

What kind of place did they hide it in? I've only ever found caches in little plastic boxes under park benches.
