Had to choose between my last roll of Portra 400 or pushing some expired Tri-X for a foggy morning shoot in San Francisco.

I gambled on the Tri-X, shot it at 1600, and the grain was wild but the mood was perfect, so do you think pushing old film is worth the risk or should you always play it safe with fresh stock?

Honestly, that's the whole point of film though, right? You took a risk and it paid off with a specific look you couldn't buy. I'd only play it safe for a job where you absolutely know what you need.

You said you'd only play it safe for a job where you know what you need. What about a personal project with a tight deadline, like a zine or a show? Would you still risk the unpredictable film then, or does the deadline force you to use the safe option?
