A kid asked me what a soldering iron was for and it threw me back

I was at a swap meet in Portland last weekend, and this teenager pointed at my old Weller station and asked if it was a 'special glue gun'. I had to explain the whole concept of melting metal to make a connection. It made me think about how twenty years ago, most people had at least a vague idea you could fix a radio or a TV. Now, if something breaks, the first thought is to replace the whole unit. I used to fix three or four VCRs a week in my dad's shop. What's the last common household item you've seen that was actually worth repairing for most folks?

That "special glue gun" question is perfect, it sums up the whole shift. My neighbor threw out a perfectly good coffee maker last month because the carafe was chipped. The replacement part was fifteen bucks online, but she just bought a whole new machine. I feel like we've lost the manual that came with our own stuff.

A chipped carafe? She threw the whole thing out?
