Debate: Should drafters switch to full 3D or stick with 2D? My boss says 3D is the future but I push way more paper drawings.

My lead drafter at the shop in Austin told me last week that 3D models kill creativity and add hours to simple jobs, but a client just demanded everything in Revit or they walk. Has anyone here found a solid middle ground that actually works for both sides?

Hybrid is the only way that works. 2D for quick sketches and markups, 3D for the final product that clients actually want to see. Your boss isn't wrong about the future but your lead isn't wrong about bloat either. Keep a drafting board handy for the fast stuff and fire up Revit when the contract says so. That way nobody gets to yell at you for wasting time or losing the job.

Got a buddy who tried going full 3D on everything last year. Sketching out a fascia detail in Revit took him the whole morning, just clicking through menus and waiting for the model to regenerate. His old-school partner drew the same thing on trace paper in fifteen minutes with a pencil and a scale. They got the job done because the partner kept his drafting board right next to the workstation. Now my friend keeps a roll of yellow trace and a few sharpies in his drawer for the quick stuff, and only fires up the heavy software when the contract or client demands it.
