A customer in my store said something about paint that made me rethink my whole approach

An older guy named Frank came in looking for a specific shade of blue for his kitchen cabinets. He told me he always mixes his own primer by adding a bit of the final color paint to a gallon of white primer, about a cup per gallon. He said it helps with coverage and can save you a coat. I tried it on a small bookshelf project last month and it worked way better than I expected. Has anyone else tried this trick, or is there a reason I shouldn't do it on bigger jobs?

Remember my buddy tried that on his whole living room... tinted the primer like Frank said. It covered the dark green walls okay, but the finish coat looked kinda off, not quite the right color. He ended up needing three top coats to fix it. The paint store guy later told him it can mess with how the paint sticks and dries. Saved a little time on the primer step but cost him more paint in the end.

Sounds like a great way to mess up the primer's formula.
