Tried a coworking space in a small town for a month, ended up talking to plants more than people
I spent the last 4 weeks working out of a coworking space in a town called Boone, North Carolina. Population is maybe 19,000. I figured I'd get some focused work done away from my Airbnb. But the space had maybe 3 other people show up the whole time I was there. Most days I was the only one in the room. I started talking to the snake plant in the corner just to break the silence. Learned that coworking only works if there's actually people to cowork with. Anyone else tried a smaller town setup and ended up feeling more isolated than when you stay home?

Is the whole "office culture" thing just a myth for most of us? I tried a satellite spot outside Denver once and it was basically a library where you paid for bad coffee. The thing is, coworking spaces sell this image of busy professionals networking, but in practice they're just waiting rooms with WiFi. Most people are too focused on their own screen to say hello anyway. I think there's this weird gap between what places promise and what actually happens, and it leaves you feeling like you're the only one who doesn't get the joke. At least the plant in Boone didn't bother me with small talk.
