Pilot chapter contest entry made me rethink my ending habit
I used to always wrap up my short story prompts with a neat twist, felt like that was the only way to land them. Last month I entered a local library contest in Spokane where the judge, a retired editor, told me my entry was 'too tidy to breathe.' That comment stuck with me, so I went back to a piece I'd abandoned and cut the last two paragraphs entirely. Now I'm trying to leave at least one thread loose in every prompt response I post here. Does anyone else struggle with resisting the urge to tie everything off, or is that just my own echo?
